Time is the most interesting and complex concept you can allow your mind to dive into and explore. The past, the present and the future are the universal rules that we all have to live by, but how we perceive these concepts are what make us uniquely different.
A person who sees the future as a place that is ripe with opportunity is vastly different than the person who stresses over the possibilities of what may or may not happen to their lives and finances. These views are simply the mindsets of optimists and pessimists, and their view on the future, or better put their view on the concept of time, is what defines their lives and defines who they are as a person. Time is a factor that defines all of us.
An interesting notion about time is that we are actually all experiencing our lives in the past. The neurons in our eyes, ears, hands, and everywhere else imaginable all need to send an electrical signal to our brain in order for us to to able to “sense” what is happening around us. When you look at an object, it takes time for the light that hits your eyes to turn into an electrical signal and travel to your brain. By the time you are aware that you seeing something, you actually saw that object in the past. Using this logic, everything the we experience is something that has already occurred.
A New Approach
The purpose behind this information is to make you aware. Time is only a concept that humans had to invent to allow us to make sense of the world that we live in. The past, present, and future often appear to be linear and follow a set path, but that is actually not true. We live in a world that allows for any and all possibilities, and as long as you embody this mindset towards the notion of time, then you will take control of your life. Now I am not talking about bending time or any meta-physical experience, but instead I am suggesting that you realize that just as you have the ability to control your actions, you control where your time is spent.
You can use time as a tool, leveraging it to to align your life to where you want it to be. Most of us live in the past only do deal with present actions that arise. This is unproductive and leads to stress. If you are always having to deal with the present, then that leaves little time to work towards where you want your future to be.
We reminisce on fond memories, analyze past mistakes and attempt to break down every scenario in our lives. We replay specific situations that have happened to us over and over and over again until we cannot possibly look at it from another angle. These actions are representative of someone living in the past, and if you are allowing your life to be spent there then you have little to no control of your time.
Time for a Change
The solution to all of this is simple. You need to live you life in two different phases of time: in the present and in preparation for the future. When you are living in these two different concepts of time, you can take control of you life and be able to make all of your dreams align with your state of being.
In the present:
Living in the present has historically been hailed as the key to happiness. The ability to immerse yourself in the current state of what is happening around you will eliminate stress, remove worry and bring a sense of peace to your life. There are a few ways to be able to do this and all it takes is a small amount of effort on your part.
- Meditation: This is key. Meditation is one of the most beneficial habits a person can develop in their lifetime. It allows you clear your mind and unwind at any moment in life. Meditation is the key to bringing you into the present and expanding your mental capabilities. However, do not make the mistake of attaching a religious ideology with meditation. Meditation is one of the most powerful tools we can use and it has nothing to do with a Buddhist system of beliefs. View meditation strictly as a habit that you can embrace to relax and center yourself, and you will be pleasantly surprised.
- Awareness: This term is pretty vague, but being aware of what you are doing is highly beneficial. Anytime throughout the day you feel is if you do not know what you are doing or you find yourself daydreaming, just be aware of your actions. If you can pinpoint these time wasters, then you can take the steps to change your actions and do something that is more productive.
Preparing for the Future
The other state of time that you need to live in is the future. The future is ten years from now, next Saturday, 5 seconds from now, it is eternal. We are all contently racing though time towards this future that no one is certain of yet we are certain that it is coming. Since the future is inevitable it needs to be prepared for. The future holds all of your hopes and dreams, all of the significant others that you fall in love with, all of your family members and their children. The future is so important and you need to be preparing for what has yet to come.
To prepare for the future all you need to do is plan. Plan for what you want to do with you life. Plan for your success. Plan for everything that has yet to come. Every week I take twenty minutes to plan out all of the big tasks and goals that I need to accomplish. This allows me to be very clear and precise in what I need to do each week. Next I assign those tasks to a certain day and then allow the day to unfold, simply checking off the tasks as I go. This methodology of planning is different than most. I do not like to structure my day hour by hour (unless I have a meeting or appointment) because I like to allow room for spontaneity. This keeps the habit of planning from getting old and monotonous.
Take Control of Time and Your Life
With a new paradigm of time, anyone can go and achieve all that they have ever wanted. We are here on this earth only once, and there is no reason to ever give up part of your time here for something that is not going to take you to where you want to be in your life. When I made this realization my life was changed forever. Everything I do with my time I now do it because I want to do it and that is what you should do as well. Time is the most valuable asset we have, don’t waste it.
