We all know that any change requires action. We are solely in control of our actions, and each choice we make has the power to affect the rest of our lives. Sometimes we are happy, sometimes we are sad, sometimes we crave excitement and sometimes we desire to be left alone to our thoughts. Eventually, we all have the same feeling. We need change. We need to do something different and make some sort of impactful decision in our lives. The decision could come at a cross roads in our lives, it could be a relationship decision, a career choice, or whether or not to go back to school. Or maybe the feeling is vague. You know you need to make a change, but you are not sure what the change is or how to actually do it.
Whatever the feeling it is that you have, there are only 5 steps needed in order to make an impactful change in your life. When I realized that I need to change my life, I use these steps as a sort of guidelines. Self-improvement is not a difficult task, and anyone can better themselves at any point in our lives.
1. Recognize That You Need to Make a Change
This is the first step to every program, every series of events, and every self-help ideology out there, and this is the first step for a reason. We must first identify what our desire is. In order to embark on a journey of self-improvement and a have a change of life experience, we need to be willing to admit to ourselves that one is necessary. Do you ever wonder what if? Do you ever wish you were doing something different? Do you ever feel burnt out and wish you could try something new? These are all signs that it is time to change something in your life.
2. Get Yourself in the Right Mindset
Our personal paradigm is not the first step, but it is the most important. To make a change in our lives, we must be able to frame the idea that change is not only possible, but inevitable. We are creators. We fully in control of the actions we take and how respond to the effects of those actions. We must embrace that anything is possible, and the fear of making changes in our lives is only something that exists in our minds. When we recognize these fears and discover what stresses us, we can remove them and be ready to embrace our change.
3. Decide How to Change Your Life
Next you must decide what you are changing and how you are going to make this change. Does the feeling inside of you compel you to change something simple like the route you take to work or the foods you eat at breakfast? Or are you going to make a massive change in your life and begin a new career, change your relationship, or move to a new city? Whatever it is, decide on something and create an action plan. The plan will be a simple idea of how to implement your new life decision. It does not need to be detailed, nor will it outline your entire journey. It just needs to be able to guide you to take action.
4. Take Action and Change
An idea without action does nothing. We must act on our dreams, desires, and wishes. Our outcomes are a reflection of the amount of work that we put into our goal, and the actions that we take will determine the results. This step is the simplest, but the most difficult. We simply must do. This is where fear can enter our minds and threaten the changes we wish to make, but because we are in a paradigm that fear cannot control us, we can act without worry and begin an entirely new journey in life.
5. Reflect on What You Have Done
After we have done something different in our lives, no matter how large or small we should reflect on the process and the outcome. How did you feel after? Was it difficult? What did you learn from an entirely new experience? All of these questions can provide insight to ourselves and who we are as a person. So the next time you decide to change your life, you have already cleared a trail to begin again.
